Teacher’s Guides

To parents and teachers:

I See the Rhythm of Gospel is a book written for children and adults to enjoy–together!  It is a unique introduction to the history of black gospel music and the African American people who created it.  From the role that Christianity played during the African slave trade to the influence that rhythm and blues, soul, and hip hop have had on gospel, you and your child will enjoy the sights and sounds that you will find in this book.

And, to make the experience even more educational and rewarding, we have prepared these teacher’s guides to provide you with fun ideas to help your young ones explore I See the Rhythm of Gospel.

When you purchase I See the Rhythm of Gospel, in each section of the book, you will find:

  • a poem
  • illustrations
  • a timeline of historical events
  • a short description of the illustration and what it is trying to depict

Additionally, the book also contains a CD of 5 sample songs.

In the teacher’s guides you can download from this website, you will find:

  • Language Arts exercises
  • Social Studies exercises
  • Music exercises
  • an expanded timeline where we have highlighted some events may provide opportunities for further discussion
  • notes about the symbols and imagery used by the artist in each picture

We hope you will use these tools to encourage your students’ creativity through poetry, music, and painting.
